Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers (also known as Raising Cane’s) is actually a fast-food restaurant chain focusing on chicken fingers, which was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by Todd Graves and Craig Silvey on August 26, 1996. While company headquarters stay in Baton Rouge, a second restaurant support office was opened in Plano, Texas during 2009 and a third in 2018 in raising canes prices, Nebraska. The company has 437 restaurants in 27 states in the United States, with an additional 22 restaurants in the Middle East.
Todd Graves first started having dreams about his own restaurant during the early 1990s. Craig Silvey, a preliminary partner in Todd’s plan, was enrolled in a strategic business plan writing course at LSU at that time. They wrote the business plan and Silvey turned it in, for which Silvey received a “B-“. Even though the strategic business plan was rejected numerous times by potential investors, Graves set out to create the money he needed to start the restaurant, first by doing work in refineries in California, then by fishing for sockeye salmon in Alaska. He and Silvey then obtained an SBA loan, which they used to open the first restaurant in Baton Rouge on the intersection of Highland Road and State Street close to the LSU campus. They even drew on the aid of friends and family for a number of the work on Cane’s #1, and most of these names are carved within the restaurant woodwork. Originally, the tiny restaurant competed against a similarly themed drive-in called Bailey’s Chicken Fingers on the opposite end of the campus. Graves and Silvey, who both worked as salmon fishermen in Alaska to increase money to start the initial Raising Cane’s restaurant, were planning to name the chain Sockeye’s Chicken Fingers, following the Sockeye salmon they fished for. The two decided to not name their restaurant right after the fish to avoid confusion in whether the restaurant sold seafood or chicken fingers.
